From the Beijing World / Itineraries

Temple of Heaven and Western Contrasts

Compare the Temple of Heaven's monumental ritual landscape with smaller eastern parks or a separate Western Hills excursion to Fahai Temple.

Temple of Heaven and Western Contrasts

Why go

The preserved branch contains useful contrasts but spans much of Beijing. Make the Temple of Heaven the central visit, where its circular halls, marble terraces and cypress landscape explain imperial rites. For an eastern urban day, pair it with the altar setting at Ritan Park or the open space of Chaoyang Park. Fahai Temple lies far to the west and deserves a deliberate excursion for its Ming murals. Treat those choices as alternate branches rather than forcing every stop into one day.

Useful to know

  • Treat the eastern parks and the Western Hills as alternative branches.
  • If you choose Fahai Temple, allow road time and verify current access before leaving the center.
