Novi Beograd
Across the Sava from old Belgrade, Novi Beograd spreads out in postwar blocks and riverside paths. It rewards a walk focused on the city's twentieth-century design rather than a single landmark.
The district began rising in 1948 through the work of youth brigades, with planning shaped by international modernist ideas. Its broad layout makes a clear contrast with the compact streets across the river. Follow a manageable stretch of the riverbank and look inland at the scale of the planned blocks.
What to look for
Postwar blocks show the broad scale of Novi Beograd's planned streets.
The Sava bank faces the older city across the water.
Riverside paths lead toward the meeting of the Sava and Danube.
Useful to know
Choose one part of this large district before setting out; Novi Beograd has no single entrance.
Pair a riverside walk with Ušće Tower as an exterior landmark.
