Why go
Hans Gieng’s fountain turns a busy shopping street into a close look at Bern’s sculpted public art. Its bagpiper was inspired by an Albrecht Dürer woodcut, and the fountain once stood by an inn associated with traveling minstrels. Those connections make the figure more than street decoration.
What to look for
- The bagpiper figure crowns the fountain column.
- Look for the golden goose and the monkey playing a flageolet.
Useful to know
- Pause near Spitalgasse 21 to see the smaller figures as well as the bagpiper.
- Combine this short stop with the Church of the Holy Spirit and a walk along Spitalgasse.
