Untertorbrücke
Bern’s oldest Aare bridge offers a lower, more intimate crossing than nearby Nydeggbrücke. Walk it to understand how the eastern Old City once connected across the river.
For centuries this was Bern’s only bridge over the Aare. Its stone arches and heavy piers preserve the core of a late medieval crossing, even though former gates and fortifications are gone. The contrast with the larger 19th-century Nydeggbrücke makes the city’s changing river routes easy to see.
What to look for
Three slender stone arches carry the historic crossing.
The bridge sits below the larger Nydeggbrücke.
The unequal piers recall the former fortified eastern bridgehead.
Useful to know
Take the smaller bridge as a separate crossing from Nydeggbrücke to compare their scale.
Allow for the descent toward the river and a climb back to the Old City.
