Why go
This Enkarterri town grew along the Kadagua in a valley that linked Biscay with Castile. Walking toward Puente Viejo, also called La Muza, makes the old crossing and its tower the clearest starting point for reading the town. From there, the medieval streets show how Balmaseda developed around movement through the valley, not around the sea that shapes many other Biscay excursions.
What to look for
- Puente Viejo, or La Muza, and its tower.
- The medieval street pattern near the Kadagua River.
- The Ordunte mountain setting around the town.
Useful to know
- Start at the old bridge, then continue through the historic streets on foot.
- Allow this inland outing its own time instead of treating it as a brief add-on to a coast trip.
