Why go
The town sits where the estuary opens toward the Bay of Biscay, so its harbour gives a direct view of the meeting between sheltered water and open coast. Its surf reputation comes from conditions at that mouth, but a visit need not depend on waves. The old fishing settlement and waterfront make a useful contrast with inland Gernika or the wider Urdaibai wetlands.
What to look for
- The small harbour at Urdaibai's western estuary mouth.
- Views toward the open coast and the estuary from the waterfront.
- Surf conditions that change with sea and weather.
Useful to know
- Use the harbour as your first viewpoint, then explore the streets rising from it.
- Combine Mundaka with another Urdaibai stop if you want more than a short waterfront visit.
