Puente Bizkaia
This 1893 transporter bridge carries a suspended gondola between Portugalete and Getxo while ships pass below. Ride across for the engineering; the upper walkway offers a separate viewpoint.
Puente Bizkaia solved a practical estuary problem: connect two busy banks without blocking shipping into Bilbao. Alberto Palacio's iron structure lifts its track high above the water while the moving gondola carries people below. It remains a working crossing and is recognised by UNESCO. Watch the suspended cabin move from the riverbank first, then decide whether a crossing or the upper walkway suits your visit.
What to look for
The gondola suspended beneath the high iron crossbeam.
Towers, cables and moving mechanism visible from either bank.
Estuary views from the separate upper pedestrian walkway.
Useful to know
Decide between the ordinary gondola crossing and the separate upper walkway visit.
Check the operator's current walkway access and lift status, especially if step-free access matters.
Cross between Portugalete and Las Arenas to see both riverbanks.
