Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Head to Edgbaston for landscaped grounds and terrace glasshouses, especially if you want a garden visit with a recognisable nineteenth-century plan rather than another city-centre building.

John Claudius Loudon’s layout gives the gardens a clear shape: glasshouses above a sloping lawn, with beds and shrubberies around the edges. Opened in 1832, the grounds retain much of that original arrangement. The interest is in moving between the formal terrace, planted landscape and Nettlefold rock garden.
What to look for
Terrace glasshouses overlook the sloping lawn.
Beds and shrubberies retain the broad structure of Loudon’s original layout.
The Nettlefold rock garden offers a contrasting planted landscape.
Useful to know
Include both the terrace and the grounds to appreciate how the garden’s layout works.
Check the seasonal closing time before travelling to Edgbaston; the grounds are an outdoor part of the visit.
