Why go

The memorial turns a civic tribute into a study of decorative craft. John Henry Chamberlain’s design dates from 1880, and its combination of pointed forms, mosaic panels and portraiture gives it a different character from the larger buildings around it. Walk around it to compare the four faces.

What to look for

  • Four gabled faces carry mosaic decoration beneath the spire.
  • Thomas Woolner’s portrait medallion depicts Joseph Chamberlain.
  • Corner pinnacles and the crocketed spire give the memorial its Gothic silhouette.

The full story

This monument commemorated Joseph Chamberlain’s public service while he was still alive. He attended its inauguration on 20 October 1880, an unusual detail to keep in mind when looking at the portrait medallion. The tribute belongs to his career as a Birmingham businessman, councillor, mayor and Member of Parliament. The architect, John Henry Chamberlain, shared his surname but was no relation. He was a friend and municipal architect, and chose a Gothic design with a strong emphasis on ornament. Thomas Woolner supplied the portrait; the Venetian firm Salviati Burke and Co. supplied the mosaics. These separate contributions explain why the monument is worth examining at more than one distance. From across the square, the spire gives it a clear outline. Close up, the portrait, mosaic surfaces and carved capitals make the tribute more personal.

Useful to know

  • Study the monument as part of a Chamberlain Square stop, then step back to see it against the civic buildings.
