Biblioteca Salaborsa
Bologna’s central public library gives you a view through its glass floor to older layers of the city. It is a worthwhile indoor pause beside Piazza del Nettuno, even on a short center walk.
The civic building holds more than books: archaeological remains beneath the covered hall trace earlier settlements and Roman Bononia. Looking down through the floor gives a direct connection between today’s public space and the city that stood here before Piazza Maggiore took shape.
What to look for
A glass floor in the covered hall reveals archaeological remains below.
The library occupies part of Palazzo d’Accursio beside Piazza del Nettuno.
The remains include evidence of Roman civic building on this site.
Useful to know
Combine Salaborsa with Piazza del Nettuno and the Fountain of Neptune next door.
Check library opening information if seeing the archaeological floor is essential to your visit.
