Palazzo dei Notai
The former notaries’ guild hall faces Piazza Maggiore and turns a quick look at the square into a lesson in medieval Bologna’s civic trades. Its layered facade deserves a pause.
The notaries’ inkpots and quills on the facade identify the profession that used this building as its seat. Different campaigns of building and a twentieth-century restoration shaped what you see now, so the palace is also a useful reminder that the square’s medieval appearance was altered over time.
What to look for
Three inkpots with quills appear in the guild’s facade emblem.
Mullioned windows mark the palace above the square.
The facade combines medieval work with Alfonso Rubbiani’s 1908 restoration.
Useful to know
Look up at the emblem while crossing Piazza Maggiore toward San Petronio.
Allow a short exterior stop; do not rely on access to the frescoed interior.
