Palazzo della Mercanzia
This late medieval merchant palace gives architectural form to Bologna’s trading past. Its exterior is the main draw when walking between the Two Towers and the old market streets.
The city commissioned a home for the merchant court here in the 1380s, at a junction tied to long-standing trade routes. Seeing the building beside Piazza della Mercanzia helps explain why this part of the center became a commercial hub rather than just a picturesque corner.
What to look for
The late fourteenth-century facade faces Piazza della Mercanzia.
Its former merchant court settled trading disputes and regulated guild business.
The building sits near the old street junction leading toward Via San Vitale.
Useful to know
Pause at the building while moving between the Two Towers and the Quadrilatero.
View the palace and its square together; they explain the same trading crossroads from different angles.
