Palazzo Fantuzzi
On Via San Vitale, this Renaissance palace stands out for its carved elephants and heavy stone facade. It is most reliable as an exterior architecture stop, with interiors dependent on access.
The elephants carrying towers refer to the Fantuzzi family arms and turn the facade into a visual play on the family name. A later Baroque staircase and decorated rooms add another layer, but the street-facing carving alone gives you something precise to seek out.
What to look for
Carved elephants with towers appear above the corner niches.
Rusticated columns give the Renaissance facade a strong, textured rhythm.
A later Baroque staircase changes the character of the interior courtyard.
Useful to know
Look for the elephants as you walk along Via San Vitale.
Check for a current exhibition or other access before planning to see the staircase and rooms.
