Santissimo Salvatore
This Baroque church offers a rich sequence of chapels and art, but interior access needs checking before you plan around it. Its facade can still be seen on a central Bologna walk.
The present church replaced a medieval foundation in the early seventeenth century, while the earlier bell tower survived. Inside, the chapels span a fourteenth-century Madonna, a 1353 work by Vitale da Bologna and later painted decoration. That mix makes the building especially rewarding for visitors tracing Bologna’s art across periods.
What to look for
The older bell tower stands beside the seventeenth-century church.
Copper figures and evangelist statues animate the facade.
The chapels contain works from medieval painting to later Baroque decoration.
Useful to know
Check the church’s official access information before making the interior a planned stop.
If access is unavailable, make this a brief exterior stop rather than building the day around it.
