Teatro Comunale di Bologna
Bologna’s eighteenth-century opera house on Piazza Verdi carries a long musical history. Go for a performance or confirmed visit if opera matters to you; otherwise, the exterior is a short university-quarter stop.
The theatre opened in 1763 with Gluck’s Il trionfo di Clelia, written for the occasion, after an earlier opera house had burned. Its public funding and municipal ownership were distinctive for a major opera house. The stage later brought Bologna important Rossini, Verdi and Wagner performances.
What to look for
Antonio Galli da Bibiena designed the eighteenth-century theatre.
Gluck composed Il trionfo di Clelia for its opening.
The auditorium has tiers of boxes around the stage.
Useful to know
Check the official programme for a performance or visit before planning around the interior.
Pair an exterior look with nearby university buildings and Piazza Verdi.
