Why go
The choice is between a street-shopping circuit and Bologna's food markets. Via dell'Indipendenza, Via Ugo Bassi, Via Rizzoli and Via D'Azeglio connect the central retail area; the Quadrilatero, just east of the square, puts produce, fish and deli counters into tight historic lanes.
The full story
The four main shopping streets form an easy framework around Piazza Maggiore. Via dell'Indipendenza runs north, while Via Ugo Bassi, Via Rizzoli and Via D'Azeglio carry the central circuit in other directions. For fashion shopping, Via Farini, Via dell'Archiginnasio and nearby Galleria Cavour provide another cluster south of the square. The experience changes quickly in the Quadrilatero, east of Piazza Maggiore: Via Pescherie Vecchie and Via Drapperie are narrow food streets where produce, fish and salumerie counters make browsing as much about Bologna's ingredients as buying. Mercato delle Erbe, off Via Ugo Bassi, is another food-market option if you want to focus on produce. Piazza dell'Otto Agosto is associated with a flea market, but market days and stall mixes can change. Pick one retail cluster and one food area rather than trying to cover every street in a single pass.
