Certosa di Bologna
A former Carthusian monastery became Bologna's monumental cemetery. Its cloisters, porticoes and sculpture make this a spacious, reflective art visit outside the old centre.
The Certosa feels like a small city of the dead: enclosed walks open into courts, chapels and ranks of sculpted tombs. Its monastic origins explain that unusual plan, while later funerary monuments tell a different story of Bologna's families and public memory. Go for the architecture as well as individual memorials, and give the site more time than an ordinary church stop.
What to look for
Porticoes and cloisters carry the former monastery's plan through the cemetery.
Sculpted tombs turn individual memorials into an outdoor art collection.
The San Girolamo church adds a distinct interior to the wider grounds.
Useful to know
Allow time to wander the connected courts rather than aiming for a single monument.
Pair the visit with nearby Stadio Renato Dall'Ara only if you want an exterior look or have an event planned.
