Santo Stefano Complex
Behind the church front on Piazza Santo Stefano lies a connected group of sacred spaces, including the Holy Sepulchre church, Pilate's Courtyard and a cloister. Its changing rooms reward a deliberate visit.
The complex is known as the Seven Churches, but its appeal is the passage between very different spaces rather than a count of buildings. Move from the church interiors into Pilate's Courtyard and the Romanesque cloister to see how Bologna built its own sacred landscape around the idea of Jerusalem.
What to look for
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre forms a distinctive central space.
Pilate's Courtyard contains a historic stone basin.
The Benedictine cloister has a two-level loggia.
Useful to know
See the complex from Piazza Santo Stefano first, then leave time for the connected interior spaces.
