Place de la Victoire
At the southern end of Rue Sainte-Catherine, this open square pairs an old city gate with playful contemporary sculpture. It makes a natural pause before or after the shopping street.
The contrast is the draw: Porte d’Aquitaine recalls an older entrance to Bordeaux, while Ivan Theimer’s obelisk and bronze tortoises turn the middle of the square into a place to look closely. It is an easy stop on a walk through the centre rather than a destination requiring a long visit.
What to look for
Porte d’Aquitaine stands at the edge of the square.
Ivan Theimer’s obelisk was installed in 2005.
The bronze tortoises carry grape and wine motifs on their shells.
Useful to know
Link the square with a walk along Rue Sainte-Catherine.
Allow a brief stop to examine the gate and sculptures before continuing.
