Arno's Court Triumphal Arch
This ornamental arch in Brislington is a short exterior stop for anyone interested in Bristol's eccentric eighteenth-century architecture. Its details reward a closer look, though the viewing approach needs checking.
The arch was built as a grand entrance to the Arno's Court estate and later moved. Its classical shape mixes Gothic and Moorish decoration, a striking combination for a former gateway. Looking at both faces also reveals how much more elaborate the public-facing side is.
What to look for
The classical arch carries Gothic and Moorish details.
Stone carving makes the former estate gateway more than a simple road feature.
The rear face is plainer than the front.
Useful to know
Treat this as a brief exterior stop, not a building to enter.
Check the current streetside approach before travelling specifically to see it.
Pair it with the nearby Black Castle for two parts of the former estate story.
