Blaise Castle Estate
Blaise Castle Estate mixes wooded trails, a limestone gorge and an eighteenth-century castle folly. The outdoor landscape is the reliable draw; entry to the folly is a separate question.
The small castle-like folly gives the estate a memorable goal, but the approach through woodland and above Hazel Brook is part of the visit. This is also the landscape praised in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. The contrast between invented castle and real gorge makes it more than a simple viewpoint.
What to look for
The castle folly crowns a rise within the estate.
Hazel Brook cuts a gorge through the limestone landscape.
Wooded paths make the approach part of the experience.
Useful to know
Wear footwear suitable for uneven estate paths.
Check the current position on entering the castle itself before travelling for that purpose.
Allow time for the grounds rather than making the folly a drive-by stop.
