Clifton Suspension Bridge
Cross the Avon Gorge on Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge for a close view of its towers and a wide view down the cliffs. The crossing is exposed, especially in wind.
From the deck, the bridge's engineering and the gorge's scale become clear at the same time. The Clifton and Leigh Woods ends give different views back towards the structure, so it is worth seeing more than one angle. Its red sandstone setting and tall stone towers make the bridge distinctive even before you cross.
What to look for
The pedestrian crossing hangs high over the River Avon.
The Clifton and Leigh Woods towers frame different gorge views.
The Leigh Woods tower rises above a red sandstone abutment.
Useful to know
Cross on foot for the strongest sense of height and structure.
Allow for wind and rain on the open deck.
Continue to a public gorge viewpoint for a full view of the bridge.
