Choose a first visit you can enjoy

Choose a few connected subjects and leave time to look. The British Museum joins objects from many cultures and periods across several levels, so one route covers a selection.

The Great Court gives you a place to pause before choosing a gallery. The circular Reading Room is a useful landmark, with collection spaces reached around it and on other levels. Start by choosing what you want to spend time with, rather than counting the rooms you might pass through. The Museum brings objects from many places and periods into one institution. A visit can compare their materials, uses and journeys. Royal sculpture, a private letter and a burial object ask for different kinds of attention. A few connected examples will give you more to remember than a hurried attempt to reach every famous name.

Choose a question

A first visit can follow changes in meaning as objects enter a museum. The Rosetta Stone begins with a decree and leads into decipherment and military transfer. The Assyrian sculptures show how rulers presented power. The Enlightenment gallery turns attention to collecting and classification. Thematic visits let you stay longer with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Britain, Asian materials or acquisition histories.

Allow for the building

The Museum’s plan distinguishes eight numbered levels. A printed panel can include more than one level, so a neighbouring label does not always mean a flat walk. Africa is on Level -2, while other collections require upward transfers. Use the level numbers and named lifts when planning a change of floor. Breaks and movement belong in the time you set aside.

Keep the visit flexible

Some galleries have shorter hours than the Museum as a whole. A work can also be stored while its wider collection remains on view. Keep an alternative subject in mind when choosing a route. The shorter and longer readings use the same physical sequence, so you can change how much you read without turning the visit into a different walk. Human-remains displays are an optional choice.
