Begin in Egyptian sculpture, Room 4, with the Sphinx’s beard fragment and the Shabaka Stone. A renewed monument and an inscribed stone later used for grinding introduce different ways an object can survive. Upstairs, Nebamun’s marsh painting pictures the life he hoped to continue after death. The visit then includes the mummy galleries and the naturally preserved Gebelein man, with the much earlier Hunters Palette offering another image of people and animals. This route includes human remains. If you prefer a visit without a human-remains stop, choose Britain through things people carried and buried. The shorter and longer readings follow the same physical sequence.
