The main entrance is on Great Russell Street. It leads into the Museum at Level 0 and towards the Great Court. The Montague Place entrance approaches from the north at Level -1, with the North stairs and lift linking onward. Entry to the permanent collection is free. Advance booking is recommended, and entry without a booking depends on available capacity. Everyone goes through security and a bag search, so leave time before the point at which you want to start a route.

Bring a bag you can take inside

Wheeled suitcases and larger bags are not allowed inside the Museum. The cloakroom is a separate facility with its own conditions. Arrange storage for prohibited luggage before arriving.

Match your arrival to the galleries

The Great Court and individual galleries can have different hours. Some Assyrian and other rooms have shorter daily opening windows. Use the room information alongside the Museum’s opening times when choosing a start. Admission and security waiting come before the time needed to walk and read a route.

Choose the useful entrance and lift

The Great Russell Street approach has entrance lifts for step-free access. From Montague Place, use the North lift for the level change. If you need help reaching a particular gallery, give its room number and level at the Information Desk. Follow the entrance signs on arrival rather than treating a point at the centre of the building as a doorway.
