Why some works appear only briefly

Light-sensitive works on paper and silk need controlled exposure. Changing displays, collection images and Study Room access offer different ways to encounter them, and stored works have no permanent gallery stop.

A drawing can be central to a collection while spending much of its life away from the galleries. Paper, silk and the materials used on them can change under light. Limiting exposure is one way to preserve a work for future viewing. That creates a different kind of museum experience from a large stone sculpture. The work you hope to see may belong to a changing selection. A collection image, a gallery exhibition and a Study Room appointment each give a different form of access.

A gallery selection changes

Rooms 90 and 90a are real spaces for changing prints and drawings displays. The Museum’s online Prints and Drawings gallery is a separate resource. A work appearing in the online collection does not establish that it is on a wall today. Historical exhibition notices describe their own dates, even when they remain easy to find long afterwards.

Three works beyond the current display

Leonardo da Vinci’s warrior drawing, made in silverpoint around 1475–1480, is currently off display. So is Michelangelo’s Fall of Phaeton, drawn in black chalk in 1531–1533. The original Admonitions Scroll is also currently stored. Its painted scenes belong to a much earlier Chinese tradition and require their own account. These are specific works in the collection, with different makers and materials.

Plan for the kind of encounter available

Use the current exhibition selection when deciding to visit a gallery. Study Room services are separate from walking into a public display and have their own arrangements. If a work is stored, an image can still support close reading of its marks and composition. A reproduction should keep its own identity. It does not become the original because it shows the same drawing or painting.
