A torc curves around the space where a person’s neck would have been. Twisted bars, hollow terminals and worked surfaces show different ways of making these ornaments. The room’s gold and other metalwork sits alongside tools and objects associated with feasting and daily life. The Basse Yutz flagons combine vessel shapes with animal decoration. Torcs from different finds offer another way to compare skills and forms across Britain and Europe. The gallery covers several societies over the centuries before and during the beginning of Roman expansion into Britain. Lindow Man introduces human remains into this display. His body was preserved in peat, and the evidence for injuries has prompted different interpretations of his death. If you prefer to avoid human remains, you can focus your visit on the metalwork and other objects in the room.
