The tomb of Payava gives this gallery an architectural focus. Made around 360 BC, it combines a burial monument with carved scenes on its surfaces. It came from Lycia in southwest Turkey, where local rulers and elites drew on several artistic traditions. Around that large work, jewellery, metalwork and sculpture offer a closer view of possessions and commemoration in the fourth century BC. The period brought shifts in political power and new settings for private wealth. The Aberdeen Head gives the room a different scale of sculpture. A monument can announce status through its size, while a carved face concentrates attention on expression and surface.
