The surviving horse fragments give a sense of the scale of the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. They belonged to a four-horse chariot that formed part of a vast tomb built for Maussollos, a ruler in what is now southwest Turkey. Colossal statues and carved relief slabs survive alongside the horses. The building itself has been lost, so the gallery brings together portions of an architectural and sculptural scheme. A fragment can preserve a few details at a scale intended to be seen from much farther away. The Nereid Monument gives you a Lycian comparison for a tomb that adopted Greek architectural forms. Here, the huge figures and chariot material help you imagine the scale of Maussollos’s monument. For step-free access arrangements, ask at the Information Desk before setting out for Room 21.
