A coin gives a small surface to a large claim. A ruler’s image, a name or a slogan can travel with every exchange. Room 68 follows money through coins, paper notes, shells and digital systems. The suffragette-marked penny gives one familiar object an added political message. Cowrie shells and a Ming banknote offer very different materials for payment and value. The gallery also includes an electrum stater, made from an alloy of gold and silver. Compare what makes each example usable. Some money depends on a material people value, while an inscription or issuing authority can supply another kind of trust. The size of the coin or note also shapes what it can say. Look for the balance between a readable message and an object that has to pass repeatedly from hand to hand.
