Belgian Comic Art Museum

Belgian comics and the craft behind them fill Victor Horta's luminous former Waucquez department store, a short walk from Brussels-Central.

Belgian Comic Art Museum

Why go

The museum connects two local signatures in one visit: Belgium's comic-strip tradition and Brussels Art Nouveau. Original pages, production techniques and changing exhibitions add context to familiar characters, while the restored warehouse remains compelling even for visitors who are more interested in architecture than comics.

What to look for

  • Trace how a comic moves from scenario and pencil work to ink, color and publication.
  • Pause in the central hall to study Horta's ironwork, balconies and broad glass roof.

The full story

The museum occupies the former Waucquez textile warehouse, an Art Nouveau commercial building designed by Victor Horta and opened in 1906. Its sweeping iron structure, pale surfaces and glass roof create a generous daylight-filled hall that is more than a backdrop: the building demonstrates how ambitious design entered everyday commerce. Exhibitions then turn to another Belgian specialty, explaining the visual grammar and production of comics through sketches, plates, printing stages and published albums. The strongest visit moves between close reading and spatial observation. Look at how artists control a reader's pace from panel to panel, then step back to see how Horta guides movement across galleries and balconies. Permanent displays supply historical grounding, while rotating shows broaden the canon beyond internationally known characters. That combination makes the museum useful for dedicated readers, design-minded visitors and families without requiring deep prior knowledge.

Useful to know

  • Check the current exhibition list before visiting; temporary shows determine how much space individual artists receive.
  • Allow 90 minutes to two hours, and pair it with the nearby cathedral or Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries.
