From the regional World / Stories

Bucharest in Context

Romania's capital is best understood through its shifting centres: medieval court, nineteenth-century boulevards, interwar modernism and the vast interventions of Communist rule.

Bucharest in Context

Why go

This overview helps visitors connect buildings that can otherwise feel unrelated. Curtea Veche explains the early commercial core; Calea Victoriei reveals royal and bourgeois expansion; Revolution Square records political rupture; and the Parliament district shows the destructive scale of late Communist planning. Read the city as overlapping layers rather than searching for one uniform historic centre.

The full story

Bucharest grew on the Dâmbovița River at the meeting point of trade routes and princely authority. The Old Court became an early political focus, while merchant streets developed around it. After Bucharest became Romania's capital in the nineteenth century, new boulevards, institutions and residences pushed the city north and west. French-influenced public architecture appeared beside Orthodox churches and older commercial lanes. Interwar Bucharest added Art Deco and modernist buildings, creating another sharp visual layer. War, earthquakes and especially the remodelling ordered under Nicolae Ceaușescu removed large areas and displaced communities. The Palace of the Parliament and its boulevard are the most visible result, but smaller breaks in the street pattern also tell the story. A useful visit therefore moves between scales: read a church porch, a merchant passage, a civic square and a state axis as parts of the same changing capital.
