From the Buenos Aires World / Itineraries

Retiro, the Waterfront and Southern Barrios

Connect Plaza San Martín with Puerto Madero, San Telmo and La Boca for a long day tracing the city's movement from rail hub to port.

Retiro, the Waterfront and Southern Barrios

Why go

Begin among the trees and monuments of Plaza San Martín, then descend toward Puerto Madero for dock architecture and open water. Continue to San Telmo for older streets and a market break before taking direct transport to Caminito and La Bombonera. The route reveals several versions of port-city Buenos Aires, but the distances are ambitious. Make Costanera Norte and the Club de Pescadores optional, since they sit well north of the main progression.

Useful to know

  • Use direct transport between San Telmo and La Boca, and finish the La Boca section during active daytime hours.
