Al-Rifa’i Mosque
Across from Sultan Hassan near the Cairo Citadel, this later mosque pairs monumental architecture with the tombs of Egypt’s former royal family and Iran’s last shah.
The facing mosques invite a direct comparison across centuries: Al-Rifa’i’s nineteenth-century design answers the older Sultan Hassan complex opposite it. Inside, royal tombs add a political story to the architecture. This is a particularly useful stop for visitors interested in Cairo’s shift from medieval to modern rulers.
What to look for
Compare the facade with Sultan Hassan directly opposite.
Look for the large prayer hall and the mosque’s domes and minarets.
