Egyptian Museum
The museum beside Tahrir Square offers a broad encounter with ancient Egyptian objects, from early royal imagery to papyri and sculpture. It rewards a selective visit.
The Narmer Palette, the burials of Yuya and Thuya, Tanis treasures and royal sculpture give several ways into Egypt’s long history. Pick a few themes rather than trying to absorb every gallery. This is the historic Tahrir museum, a distinct institution from the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.
What to look for
Seek out the Narmer Palette for an early image of kingship.
Compare royal sculpture with the objects from Yuya and Thuya’s burials.
Look for papyri and the Tanis treasures among the varied collections.
Useful to know
Choose a few collections before entering; the range is too broad for an exhaustive short visit.
Pair the museum with a walk around adjacent Tahrir Square.
