Calgary's central neighbourhoods

Downtown Calgary contains several districts, while the Beltline begins south of 9th Avenue. Knowing the difference helps you build a walk around the river, the commercial core or a neighbourhood beyond it.

Why go

The central districts offer different starting points: Chinatown and Eau Claire lead toward the Bow River; Stephen Avenue anchors the commercial core; East Village extends the centre eastward. South of downtown, the Beltline has its own streets and cultural stops. Inglewood, Bridgeland, Hillhurst and other inner-city communities widen the choice without treating all of Calgary as one downtown.

What to look for

  • Eau Claire, Chinatown, the commercial core, West End and East Village are distinct downtown areas.
  • The Beltline lies south of 9th Avenue and includes Connaught and Victoria Crossing.
  • Bowness, Montgomery and Forest Lawn began as separate communities before joining Calgary.

Useful to know

  • Pair Chinatown or Eau Claire with a Bow River walk; use Stephen Avenue for the commercial core.
  • Treat the Beltline and farther inner-city neighbourhoods as deliberate additions to a downtown walk.
