Staying safe in Cambodia
Keep belongings close in busy streets and use established paths in remote areas. Cambodia's war history also makes landmine warnings a serious matter beyond developed visitor routes.
The precautions change with the setting. In Phnom Penh, crowded streets call for attention to bags, phones and cameras, including when riding in an open vehicle. Around remote sites, the lasting risk from landmines makes marked routes and local guidance more important than a shortcut. Check current local advice before heading into unfamiliar border or rural areas.
Useful to know
Keep a bag away from passing traffic and secure loose items on bicycle, motorcycle or tuk-tuk journeys.
Stay on established roads and paths at remote sites; heed warning signs and barriers.
Ask a local authority or trusted site operator about current conditions before exploring an unfamiliar rural area.
