East Mebon
East Mebon stands on what was once an island in a large Angkorian reservoir. Its stone elephants and raised terraces make the vanished water system easier to imagine.
The temple now sits on dry land, but its former island setting explains the broad platform and approach. Look for elephant sculptures at the terrace corners and the contrast between brick towers and stone bases. It pairs naturally with Pre Rup on a circuit east of Angkor Thom.
What to look for
Stone elephants mark the terrace corners.
Brick towers rise from a stepped platform.
