Phnom Sampeau

Phnom Sampeau is a limestone hill southwest of Battambang with shrines, caves and wide views. Its history makes the visit more than a scenic climb.

Why go

The killing caves are a memorial to Khmer Rouge violence and deserve a respectful pause. Other parts of the hill show religious use and the surrounding agricultural plain. A bat emergence may be visible near dusk, but timing and conditions should be checked locally.

What to look for

  • Caves and shrines punctuate the hill.
  • The summit looks over the plain near Battambang.

Useful to know

  • Allow time for both the memorial caves and the viewpoint.
