Banff National Park
Banff brings Rocky Mountain lakes, glaciers and the Bow Valley into one well-connected Alberta park. Its road access makes major viewpoints approachable, while popular areas can feel very different from quieter trails.
Why go
See how the Bow Valley links the town of Banff with Lake Louise and the route north towards the Columbia Icefield. The park's hot springs also explain why this landscape became Canada's first national park in 1885. Mountain scenery and the history of rail travel meet in one place.
What to look for
Lake Louise sits amid an alpine landscape.
The Bow Valley surrounds the town of Banff.
The Icefields Parkway heads north toward Jasper.
Useful to know
Give Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway separate stretches of time; they are not brief town-centre stops.
Expect mountain conditions to differ from the weather in the Bow Valley.
