From the Canada World / Travel essentials
Canada's regions and climate
Canada's weather changes sharply between the Pacific coast, Prairie interior, Great Lakes–Saint Lawrence corridor and Arctic. Plan by region and season rather than relying on a single national forecast.
Coastal British Columbia has relatively mild, rainy winters; the Prairies and interior have much colder winters and warmer summer swings. The far north has permafrost and Arctic conditions. These contrasts affect what to pack, how much ground to cover and which landscapes suit the time of year.
Useful to know
Check conditions for each region on a multi-province trip, especially when crossing from coast to interior.
Pack for wet winter weather on the British Columbia coast and more severe cold in the Prairie interior.
Treat Arctic travel as a separate planning decision from a southern Canada itinerary.
