Elk Island National Park
East of Edmonton, Elk Island protects a patchwork of grassland, aspen and boreal forest. It suits a wildlife-focused outing close to the city, with bison conservation as its defining story.
The Beaverhills landscape has long supported elk, bison and moose. Elk Island became an elk sanctuary after hunting had depleted large animals in the area, and its bison herds have since helped conservation efforts elsewhere. The mix of open and wooded habitat makes the park worth exploring beyond a single roadside view.
What to look for
Bison live in the park’s open grassland.
Aspen thickets, ponds and boreal forest add other Beaverhills habitats.
Useful to know
Keep your distance from bison and other large animals; view them from a safe position.
Make time for both open grassland and wooded areas to see the park's habitat contrast.
