Glacier National Park, British Columbia
Glacier National Park protects steep Columbia Mountains terrain around Rogers Pass. The Trans-Canada Highway gives a view into the park, but its deep snow and avalanche terrain shape any closer outing.
Rogers Pass shows how the railway and later highway were engineered through difficult mountain country. Look beyond the transport corridor for active glaciers, high peaks and dense forests. The same heavy snowfall that defines the landscape also makes trail and backcountry conditions an important part of planning.
What to look for
Rogers Pass cuts a corridor through the mountains.
Glaciated peaks rise above forested valleys.
Rogers Pass National Historic Site tells the transport story of the crossing.
Useful to know
Treat a highway crossing and a trail visit as different plans; stop only where access is suitable.
Check current trail and avalanche information before leaving the road corridor.
