Why go
The bare, rust-coloured Tablelands are made of peridotite from the Earth's mantle, rock that supports little vegetation. Western Brook Pond tells a different geological story: glaciers carved its steep valley before the land rose and cut it off from the sea. Together they make the park's UNESCO designation tangible.
What to look for
- The brown Tablelands carry little vegetation near Trout River and Woody Point.
- Glaciers carved the steep walls around Western Brook Pond.
- The barren mantle rock contrasts with greener surrounding slopes.
Useful to know
- Plan the Tablelands and Western Brook Pond as separate outings across the park.
- Leave time to examine the Tablelands on foot; its colour and sparse plant cover are the point.
