Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site
In southern Haida Gwaii, Gwaii Haanas protects islands and Haida cultural places where land and sea belong to one story. Visiting requires a deliberate marine journey, not a casual roadside stop.
Haida stewardship is central here: the Haida Nation designated the heritage site during the struggle to stop logging, and the reserve is cooperatively managed. At SG̱ang Gwaay and other village sites, Haida Watchmen help protect cultural heritage. The island ecology adds another reason to travel carefully, with species that differ from the mainland.
What to look for
SG̱ang Gwaay preserves Haida village heritage.
Islands and channels connect the reserve’s land and marine habitats.
Island wildlife and forests differ from mainland ecosystems.
Useful to know
Arrange marine transport and confirm current visitor requirements well before travel.
Treat cultural sites as living Haida heritage and follow the guidance given on site.
