From the Canada World / Areas

Jasper National Park

North of Banff, Jasper spreads across a larger, wilder stretch of the Alberta Rockies. The Icefields Parkway connects glaciers and falls, while lakes and valleys invite more time away from the road.

Jasper National Park

Why go

The Columbia Icefield, Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls show the mountain water system at different scales. Farther into the park, Maligne Lake and the Tonquin Valley offer very different outings. Jasper is also part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its linked mountain landscapes.

What to look for

  • The Columbia Icefield holds glaciers near the park’s southern edge.
  • Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls lie along the Icefields Parkway.
  • Maligne Lake sits among surrounding mountains.

Useful to know

  • Allow a full travel day for the Icefields Parkway if stopping at several sites.
  • Check current access and trail conditions before committing to a valley or backcountry outing.
