From the Canada World / Areas

Okanagan Valley

This long interior British Columbia valley links lakes, orchards and vineyards. Its spread-out geography makes it a regional stay rather than one quick wine stop.

Why go

Lake Okanagan, Skaha Lake and Osoyoos Lake anchor different parts of the valley, with vineyards and towns between them. Moving south changes the landscape and growing conditions, so the interest is in comparing areas rather than collecting wineries on a rushed drive.

What to look for

  • Vineyards line Lake Okanagan and neighbouring lakes.
  • Dry interior slopes rise above the lake shores.
  • Kelowna, Penticton and Osoyoos anchor different growing areas.

The full story

Wine growing in the Okanagan began with mission plantings in the nineteenth century, including vines grown for sacramental wine near Kelowna. For much of the twentieth century, production leaned on fruit wines and hybrid grapes. A later shift toward vinifera plantings helped shape the region visitors encounter today. The Osoyoos Indian Band established Inkameep Vineyards in 1975, an important marker in that transition. Geography matters as much as the timeline: vineyards lie along several lakes, and the valley's soils, slopes and local climates vary markedly from north to south. A visit is more rewarding when it compares a couple of these settings instead of treating the Okanagan as one uniform wine district. Around Osoyoos, the drier southern setting feels different from Kelowna.

Useful to know

  • Pick a section of the valley for each day; its wine areas are spread across several lakes.
  • Arrange a safe way to travel between tasting stops if wine is part of the day.
