Why go
This park is best understood as several distinct northern landscapes rather than one sightseeing loop. The Peace–Athabasca Delta explains its World Heritage status, while wood bison and whooping crane habitat reveal why the area has long mattered for conservation. Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan serve different approaches.
What to look for
- The Peace–Athabasca Delta forms a broad freshwater wetland where major rivers meet.
- Wood bison roam within the protected area.
- Sinkholes and springs mark the karst landscape in the park's northeast.
Useful to know
- Choose a specific area before travelling; the delta, karst and main access communities are far apart.
- Check current park access and route conditions before a remote-area trip.
- Keep wildlife observation at a safe distance, including around bison.
