Capri’s Non-Catholic Cemetery and Its International Community

Capri’s non-Catholic cemetery records the island’s international residents through their graves. It offers a quieter historical counterpart to the villas and books associated with that community.

Why go

Founded in 1878 by George Hayward, the cemetery includes graves of Norman Douglas, Gracie Fields and Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen. Its burials extend across nationalities and include Catholics as well as Protestants. After post-war neglect, municipal preservation began in 1986. Those connections make the site useful for understanding how foreign residents became part of Capri’s lasting cultural history.
