Santo Stefano rises above the square, linked to it by a staircase. The former bishop’s residence became the town hall, so religious and civic authority have left closely adjoining traces. Capri’s diocese was suppressed in 1818, but the arrangement of church, steps and municipal buildings still expresses that earlier centre of power. Around 1900 the Piazzetta accommodated markets selling vegetables, fish and meat. Its café identity developed later, with the outdoor tables of Raffaele Vuotto’s bar in the 1930s followed by other businesses. The shift from produce market to café terraces changed how people occupied the square. Memorial plaques around the town hall add another layer, commemorating political figures and residents associated with the island. Together these details give the small space a longer history than its reputation for socialising alone suggests.
